Scooby Doo Costume

My Little Scooby

This was a tough project. I spent many hours trying to figure out how to make a Scooby costume from scratch.

I finally decided to use a pattern for an animal costume. You could use a cat or lion or dog) for the body, with some black felt for a customized Scooby body.

Then I drew the face freehand with dimensional paint. I used cardboard and some filling to give the face a bit of puffiness.

The fabric that I used is like a very light-weight faux-suede; it's a much better option than fake fur because 1) it's not as hot for the child inside, and 2) it's easier to work with.

Reply: Great Costume Idea, But I Gotta Add My Two Bits

Don't you hate it when a simple project turns into more than you bargained for? When this happens we all get the "opportunity" to decide if we're going to persevere and finish the race or toss the project aside and go a simpler route. Well, Bravo! Teresa--you persevered and finished the race.

Now that we've got a great costume, if you want to fashion a Scooby Doo party around it, here are a few ideas that you can howl about:

The great thing about this party is if you can't get your hands on actual Scooby Doo partyware, you can go with a 70's tie-dye look as this was the standard color-mix for the Scooby gang's van known as the Mystery Machine.

If you have a large wall that needs a facelift back to the 70's, hit your local thrift shop and get a sheet that you can tie-dye and hang up to cover the wall. This will make for a great start in transforming a room.

Now on to the ceiling --you have a few options that you might consider. For example, if you have the time and energy, or can hire a teen to help you out, twist streamers in all the psychedelic colors across the entire ceiling. If that idea doesn't float your boat, you could cover it with balloons of all sorts of colors. Another option would be to just accent the ceiling with various sizes and colored peace symbols that you hang from the ceiling using ribbon or fishing line.

Changing your walls and ceiling alone will give a room a whole new attitude. Now if you want to add some colorful bouquets of balloons to brighten up drab corners, that would be great also. Just be sure to hang a lot of colorful curing ribbons from the balloons for added festive appeal.

Now all you need to do is add a few finishing touches to your Scooby party and you'll be ready to rock n' roll.
