Ravenclaw Girl Costume
by Kyra S.
I love Harry Potter and I've always been smart, so I was pretty pleased when every Sorting Hat quiz I took online placed me in Ravenclaw (I'd already decided I belonged there, but a little validation is always nice). I'm always annoyed by how Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tend to get ignored by fans and merchandisers (I'm looking at you, Hot Topic--I want my Ravenclaw shirt! Gryffindor and Slytherin aren't the only Houses!), so when I made plans with friends to attend the midnight openings of the Order of the Phoenix film and the Deathly Hallows release, of course I had to go in costume.
I'd been planning ahead for a while, so I ended up just cobbling together a Ravenclaw uniform from elements I found in several different places. I got a black pleated skirt at Value Village (it was too big and too long, but rolling and pinning the waistband solved that) and miraculously came across a tie in the right color; I also found a black graduation gown there, to which I sewed a Ravenclaw patch I ordered from eBay and a couple strips to the inside so I could carry my wand with me. The wand was actually just a piece of driftwood I'd found on a beach years ago--someone had carved it down to a point, and once I sanded and stained it, it totally looked like a wand. I finished off the outfit with a Ravenclaw scarf my friend knitted for me, black socks, and some schoolgirl-like shoes I already had.
And yes, I'm a gigantic nerd.Reply: Kyra certainly created A Great Costume, But I Gotta Add My Two Bits
What more can one say, but:
"Blessed by the giver
Cursed by the thief
May fortune smile upon the true
And liars come to GRIEF!"
Great job Kyra and I love that you're comfortable with who you are!
