The base of the cake is a 9" round, which I covered in green icing and spiked the icing a little to give it that grassy look. The ladybug is covered in red icing with details in black liquid fondant.

For the grass spikes I dyed white chocolate green and poured it onto wax paper. Once it dried I used a knife and just cut it into cracked, jagged edges, and then stuck them into the cake along the back. With the leftover chocolate scraps I used a leaf cookie cutter and just added some random leaves. For the dirt I sprinkled a little crushed graham cracker powder. I didn't want to use brown sugar because it would make everything too sweet.

Ladybug Cake

I recently had a birthday party for my six-year-old daughter. She loves spending time outdoors and playing with bugs. Whenever she finds a ladybug she shows it to me and watches it crawl off leaves and fly around. This year, she decided to have a bug themed party so I had to make the best cake ever, a ladybug. I have some dome-shaped baking dishes, which served as the base of the body and the head. I used a red velvet cake recipe. I have worked with fondant before and know how to use it. I made the antennas, spots, and face features from various colored fondant. The rest of the body is regular icing.

I hope these cakes inspired you a bit and perhaps gave you an idea or two about how you might go about creating your ladybug birthday cake. The most common colors associated with this type of cake are red and black. However, it is possible to create a ladybug cake using different colors – such as pink and black; which you saw above makes into a great cake.

Determine if you will create a three dimensional cake, you will use cake toppers, or, if you will use specially designed cake pans for the process. Then, you should determine the colors that will be used so that you may obtain the frosting, fondant, writing icing, or cake paint for the job. The following outlines some basic steps for creating ladybug cakes with ease:

Instructions for Making a Ladybug Cake

Items Needed:

  • Large 3D Ladybug Fondant Cake Topper – Black and Red in Color
  • Large Square Pan
  • Large Square Tray
  • White Cake Mix - (2 Boxes)
  • 2 Cups of Red Cake Frosting
  • Red Fondant
  • Black Fondant
  • White Fondant

Step 1: Once you've made your cake and cooled it down, you are ready to roll out the black fondant and cover the cake tray with a decorative foil. Then put your cake onto the center of the tray.

Step 3: Cover the cake with the 2 cups of red frosting.

Step 4: Roll out the red fondant and cover the entire cake with it.

Step 5: Then roll the black and white fondant out and cut various sized circles out of it. Place them onto the cake.

Step 6: Last of all, add a large 3D fondant ladybug cake topper.

After checking out the above images, I'm sure you have concluded that there are numerous ways to put together a ladybug birthday cake.
