Turn Your Child Into Everyone's Favorite Red Monster!

Elmo Theme Costumes – How to Easily Transform a Child into Their Favorite Little, Furry, Red Monster from Sesame Street

Elmo often describes himself as being three and a half years old, but children of all ages absolutely love him. He is best known for completely avoiding the use of pronouns and most often refers to himself as “Elmo” instead of utilizing the pronouns “I” or “Me”.

When Elmo took the screen in front of an audience for the first time, he was an immediate hit among children. Since that first appearance, numerous searches have been conducted for Elmo costume ideas. On this page, we have put together some of the most popular ideas for creating a costume of Elmo. Below, we have several pictures that you may use to come up with your own costume creations that portray everyone’s favorite little red Sesame Street monster.

My 3-year-old son Brendan wanted to be Elmo. So I bought some fuzzy red fleece fur, an orange pom-pom ball, some foam craft balls, and some of those wiggly types of eyes. This costume actually went together really fast and before I knew it my son had quickly turned into Elmo. All it took was a few snips here and there, a stitch or two, and a bit of hot glue. Okay, maybe it took a little bit more time than that, but it was well worth it!

As you took a look at the pictures that we have here, you probably received some inspiration on how to create your own Elmo costume. You may have noticed that there are three main characteristics that should be exhibited when transforming a child into their favorite little monster from Sesame Street.

These include ensuring that the costume has a significant amount of red, that the big, bright, lively eyes that Elmo has is placed somewhere on the costume, and that Elmo’s big, bright orange nose is also included. Apart from these basic characteristics, you have the ability to be as creative as you desire when it comes to your costume creation. Below, we have included a set of instructions on how to easily create your very own Elmo costume:

Instructions for Creating a Costume of Elmo

Items Needed:
  • A red hooded jumper
  • An orange fabric ball
  • Two white fabric balls
  • Two black felt circles

Step 1: The red hooded jumper will act as the basis of the costume. The child will simply need to put this jumper on to create the Elmo “body”.

Step 2: Take the two white fabric balls and place them on the hood of the jumper, at the top of the child’s head. These will be Elmo’s eyes.

Step 3: Glue two black felt circles inside of the eyes that you have placed on top of the hood.

Step 4: Attach the orange fabric ball towards the forehead section of the hood. This will be Elmo’s nose.

Step 5: Once the red jumper is on the child’s body, pull the hood over their head to immediately transform them into Elmo from Sesame Street!

As you can see, it is quite simple to acquire ideas for creating a costume of Elmo. All it takes is a little research, a little time, and a little creativity and you can easily transform a child into their favorite, little, furry, red monster from Sesame Street.
