Fire Breathing Dragon

dragon cake

I used two round cakes to make this dragon and decorated it with a smooth coat of green icing. I added cardboard wings and used various candies for the accents. The scales on the back are bubble gum tape cut into triangle shapes. The antennae are black licorice. We used sparklers for the "fire"!

In looking through the pictures that we have posted on this page, you can see that there are many ways to create an amazing cake that displays or resembles a dragon. You can create a famous dragon as seen in various media sources such as, “Dulcy” from the television series, “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “Puff the Magic Dragon”, “Spyro”, and even dragon species from the Harry Potter series, such as the “Hungarian Horntail” and the “Norwegian Ridgeback”. If you are creating a dragon birthday cake for a child, you may create “Elliot” from Disney’s, “Pete’s Dragon”, “Falkor” from “The Neverending Story”, one of the dragons from the television series, “Dragon Tales”, or, “Spike” from the “My Little Pony” series – the choice is yours!

The instructions below will assist you in creating a beautiful dragon cake that brings the magic and wonder of dragons to life:

Instructions on Creating an Old Book Dragon Cake

Items Needed:

  • 100% Edible Red Dragon Cake Topper – 9" Long by 5" Wide
  • Wilton Book Cake Pan
  • 2 Boxes of White Cake Mix
  • 2 Containers White Frosting
  • White Fondant
  • Yellow Fondant
  • Red Fondant
  • Black Writing Icing
  • Edible Brown Cake Paint
  • Large Cake Tray

Step 1: Use the 2 boxes of white cake mix to create the batter for the book cake pan. Once the batter has been created, prepare the pan based on the instructions listed on the cake mix box. Then, pour the batter in the pan, bake, and allow to cool.

Step 2: While the cake is cooling, roll out a large section of red fondant and place it over the entire cake tray.

Step 3: Next, place the book cake on the cake tray. Use the 2 containers of white frosting to cover the entire cake, but, ensure that the frosting is placed on the cake lightly so that the pages of the book cake are evident.

Step 4: The next step is to combine the yellow and white fondant and roll it out so that it transforms into an old yellow color – like, parchment paper. Once you have created the desired color, you should then place the fondant over the book pages.

Step 5: You should then take the edible brown cake paint and a cake paintbrush and brush on the color to the “cover” of the book to make it appear realistic.

Step 6: Next, place the edible red dragon cake topper on the right side of the “book”.

Step 7: On the left side of the “book”, write a personal message using the black writing icing to the person that the cake is being made for. You should try to make the message look like old, mythical handwriting.
