This dog birthday cake was for my beloved daughter who celebrated her 10th birthday.

Yellow cake mixes (2)
Raspberry jam
Brown and black food coloring
4-inch piece red fruit leather
Pretzel stick
16-ounce cans prepared white frosting
Spice drops

- Bake the cake in two round pans (head), one square pan (ears), and one muffin (snout) and allow to cool. Spread jam on one round layer and cover with second round layer.

- Flatten a spice drop into an oval for the nose. Then make 2 indentations to create the nostrils with a small round object, such as the back of a felt tip pen cap. Paint with black food coloring. Set aside.

- Flatten two spice drops for the eyes. Paint the eyes with brown food coloring. Set aside.

- Cut square cake in half diagonally and place next to the round cake. Cut the bottom off of the muffin (the snout) and with frosting adhere it to the center of the face. Place the round cake on a cookie sheet.

- Heat frosting in microwave for 30 seconds on high; stir. Then heat in 10 second intervals, stirring after each, until frosting is easily pourable. Pour frosting over cakes to cover and let dry. If needed, scrape excess frosting from cookie sheet, re-melt and pour again. Repeat as often as necessary.

- Draw the mouth with a food-safe black pen. Fold the fruit leather in half. Cut one small end the shape of the mouth and round the other small end to make the end of the tongue. Adhere the tongue with icing. Place a pretzel stick beneath the tongue into the head to keep the tongue elevated.

-Place the eyes and nose on the face. Paint the freckles on the dog with brown food coloring. Let dry. Place ears near the head.

There are obviously lots of creative ways that a person can create a dog birthday cake. There are cakes that are three dimensional and actually look exactly like a dog, there are cakes that look like a doghouse, a paw, or a bone. In addition to this, there are cakes that are shaped like the head of a dog, or standard square and round cakes that utilize cake toppers in order to display paw prints, dog bones, and even edible dog pieces.
