Materials

  • Pencil
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Utility knife
  • Gold spray paint
  • White sheet or fabric, app. 2 yards long by 1 yard wide
  • Gold ribbon, 2 yards (optional)
  • Gold cording, 8-feet
  • Star garland, 5-foot strand (available in party stores)

Instructions

Draw a wing shape on the piece of cardboard. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like, but should extend roughly from the top of your child's hips to the back of her head and no more than 8 inches beyond her shoulders (our angel has a 2-foot wingspan).

Cut out the shape with a utility knife. Poke three holes -- two near the top, one near the bottom -- in the wings. In a ventilated area, spray-paint the wings gold.

Fold the piece of fabric in half so the two short ends meet. In the center of the fold, cut an approximately 7-inch slit for your child's head. Slip the robe over her head and have her stand with her arms extended. If the robe is too long, cut it to the right length (and hem it, if you want to get fancy). You can also add a stripe of gold ribbon as we did. Just attach it with a loose running stitch about 6 inches up from the bottom hem.

Fit the robe on your child. Thread one end of the gold cord through one of the top wing holes and the other cord end through the other top hole; adjust so the cord hangs evenly.

Hold the wings up to your child's back, laying one cord over each shoulder. Cross the cords over her chest, then around to her back and through the bottom hole in the wings. Wrap the cord ends under the base of the wings and around her waist to the front, then belt them.

Top it off with a halo!. Wind the star garland into a hoop shape and place it on your child's head.

Tips: If you like to sew, McCall's makes a slightly more lavish angel robe: pattern #8436.

I didn't have much time to make a costume and my daughter wanted to be an angel. I bought some white tights and a leotard. I made the wings out of white poster board and covered them with thermolam. I then glued some white feather on the thermolam to cover it. I pinned the wings to my daughter's leotard. I bought a white head band and decorated it with white sequins and glued a white sequin flower to it.

Angel Costume Ideas - Instructions on Creating a Beautiful Angel

Items Needed:
  • White Dress
  • Silver Garland
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue
  • Glitter
  • Craft Wire
  • Cardboard
  • Silver Spray Paint
  • White Yarn
  • White Dress Shoes

Step 1: The first step to creating your costume is to take the silver garland and glue it around the neck, edges, and sleeves of the white dress.

Step 2: While the glue is drying on the dress, you may create the wings of the costume. You will need to take the cardboard and cut out the wings. Once this is done, use the silver spray paint to paint the front and backs of the wings. Once the paint is dry, you may glue the silver garland around the edges of the wings. Then, punch a hole at the top of each one. You should then cut a piece of the white yarn that will be large enough to hang around the neck and keep the wings in place. Then, tie each end of the yarn to the holes on the wings. You may also place glitter on the wings to enhance the visual appeal.

Step 3: Now, you should take the craft wire and wrap the silver garland around it. This will be placed on the head.

Step 4: Now, it is time to put the costume on. You must simply put on the dress, and then slip the wings over the head onto the neck like a necklace. Then, slide the garland halo you created over the top of the head.

Step 5: Slide on the white dress shoes. Now, you are officially an angel.
