The choice for the demeanor of the kid’s alligator costume that you create must be decided upon by both you and the child that will be wearing the apparel once it has been completed. When creating your own gator costume, it is important that you capture the most prevalent characteristic traits of the creature. These include the armor-plated spikes that are present on the animal’s back, the vicious eyes set along each side of the exceptionally large head, the powerful jaws and teeth, as well as the massive tail that assists in propelling the animal through the water, digging gator holes, and storing fat that may be used as a source of nourishment throughout the winter months.

The following outlines a set of simple instructions on how to create a kids alligator costume utilizing only a few simple supplies that may be found around the house:

Instructions For Easy Gator Costume for Kids

Items Needed:
  • Green Sweat Shirt
  • Green Sweat Pants
  • Green Gloves
  • Green Baseball Cap
  • Green Shoes
  • Light and Dark Green Felt
  • Yellow Felt
  • White Felt
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue
  • Cotton
  • Large Safety Pins
  • Green Thread
  • Cardboard Pieces

STEP 1: The green sweat shirt, green sweat pants, green gloves and green shoes will be the “body” of the alligator. While this is very basic, it is a wonderful means of creating a costume easily, and at a fraction of the costs that you would experience if you purchased a professional made costume.

STEP 2: You should create “claws” that may be placed on the green gloves and the green shoes that the child will wear once the costume is completed. For the claws, you may use either the light green, dark green or white felt. An alligator has five toes on the front legs and four toes on the back legs. So, for the gloves, you will cut out five felt pieces that resemble claws and for the shoes, you will cut out four felt pieces. Once you have the “claws”, you will simply use the hot glue gun to attach the claws to the gloves and the shoes.

STEP 3: Now, it is time to make the tail. You should simply roll out the dark green felt that you have acquired and then cut a section to match the length and width of the tail that you are trying to create. Once you have the felt prepared, you will place the cotton in the middle of the piece and then roll it to create the tail, ensuring that there is a point at the end. You will then utilize the green thread to sew this piece together. Once the piece has been sewn, you should take the light green felt and create the “spikes” down the tail. The amount of spikes that you create will depend on the size of the tail. The spikes should have a base of approximately two to three inches and should come to a point at approximately one and a half to two inches. Once you have the spikes ready, simply attach them to the tail using the hot glue gun.

STEP 4: Once the tail is ready, you will simply attach it to the back side of the bottom of the sweat shirt or the top of the sweat pants (depending on the height of the child that will be wearing the kid’s alligator costume) with the large safety pins. This way, once the child is finished wearing the costume, the tail may be taken off and the outfit may be worn for other activities.

STEP 5: Now, it is time to make the head. The head is often the most challenging part of creating homemade alligator costumes. The easiest STEP 5: method is to take a baseball cap and place green felt over it. Then, cardboard to create the upper and lower jaw. You may simply use the hot glue gun to attach the felt. Then, you will cut eyes and the teeth out of the white felt and place them in the corresponding locations of the head piece. Remember to place spikes on the head in the same manner that you placed them on the tail piece.

STEP 6: Last, you will want to place a piece of the light green felt over the stomach region to reflect the bottom of the alligator.

As you can see from the information contained here, creating alligator costumes can be easy and exciting. Of course, this is only one basic design. There are actually many different ways to create these types of costumes.
